Ajrakh is a very unique kind of showl which may also be used as a turban. It’s very common in Sindh (Pakistan), Kutch, Rajasthan. These showls are characterized by special designs and motifs. Main colours used in making of a traditional Ajrakh are Blue, Red Black, yellow and green. Though in modern version varied colours may be used.
Usage of Ajrakh is symbolic of Sindhi culture and nationalism. Ajrakhs are often presented as a sign of respect and honour. They are also worn on festive occasions such as wedding or social events. The process of making an Ajrakh is very intricate. Actually it is a form of block printing. A 2.5 to 3 meters of cloth is printed on both sides (facing and reverse) with hand carved wooden blocks. Several different blocks are used to give the characteristic repeated patterning. Utmost care is taken to make sure that the facing figure exactly matches the reverse figure. Traditionally Ajrakhs are prepared with natural dyes but in modern days, mostly chemical colours are used.
